clumsiness: Some wretched writing defies simple categorization. Thus the catch-all category “clumsy.” The problem with the writing in this category isn’t necessarily syntax or overuse of literary device or mixed metaphor. It’s sometimes more than that—and sometimes less than that…and sometimes both. It thunks on the ear or thuds on the page. For whatever reason, it’s clumsy. Catastrophically so.
